What Is Kundalini Rising? What It Is and What It Is Not

What Kundalini Rising Is Not
There is so much misinformation online about Kundalini that I want to talk about something slightly different today. Not only what Kundalini is, but mainly what it is not.
We often hear phrases like awaken your Kundalini, raise your Kundalini or activate your Kundalini energy, almost as if Kundalini were simply a powerful force sitting at the base of the spine waiting for us to push it upwards.
Within the esoteric teachings associated with Alice Bailey, the picture is much more complex.
Kundalini is described as the synthesis of three fires: fire by friction, solar fire and electric fire. Broadly speaking, these correspond to matter, consciousness and spirit, or active intelligence, love wisdom and will.
So when someone tries to force Kundalini upwards through mental effort or personality will, they are not necessarily awakening the complete Kundalini fire. Within this framework, they may instead be stimulating primarily the lowest fire, the one connected with matter.
And this is where forcing the process can become problematic.
Kundalini Rising Is Not the Beginning of Spiritual Awakening
The etheric body is described in these teachings as containing protective webs around the centres or chakras.
If energy is stimulated prematurely, these webs may be affected before the whole system is properly prepared.
This is why the popular sequence of Kundalini rises, the chakras awaken, spiritual awakening happens is actually presented the other way around in this esoteric framework.
The centres gradually awaken first.
The person develops emotional discipline, purity of life, spiritual will and greater alignment between personality and soul. The channels become clearer. The protective structures are gradually prepared.
Then, when the whole system is sufficiently ready, Kundalini can rise safely.
So Kundalini rising is not presented as the beginning of spiritual development. It is much closer to an outcome of advanced development.
Spiritual Awakening Is Not the Same as Kundalini Rising
This distinction matters because social media can make people feel as though they should be having dramatic energetic experiences in order to be spiritually progressing.
But spiritual awakening does not have to look like intense energy moving through the spine.
You can experience profound shifts in consciousness. You can become more aware, more intuitive, more loving. Your personality can transform. Your sense of spiritual purpose can deepen.
All of this can happen without experiencing what social media commonly calls a Kundalini awakening.
So perhaps the better question is not:
How do I raise my Kundalini?
Perhaps it is:
How do I develop myself so that I am prepared for whatever level of spiritual awakening is actually appropriate for me?
Because within this teaching, Kundalini is not something we need to chase or force.
It is the outcome of the development and integration of the whole system.
Do not chase the fire. Do the work that prepares the vessel.
